The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science uses the biographical sketch and current and pending support to evaluate the PI’s qualifications and potential conflicts of interest. Use the checklists below as a general guide, but consult the solicitation for specific guidance.
Biographical Sketch
The biographical sketch provides information that can be used by reviewers to evaluate the PI’s potential for leadership within the scientific community.
- Who submits: Covered individuals, including the PI, Co-PI and each senior/key person at the prime applicant and any proposed subaward.
- When to submit: At proposal, when adding new covered individuals, whenever significant changes occur, and if requested as part of interim reports.
- Format: Use the DOE Biographical Sketch form on SciENcv (required). Learn more about using SciENcv.
-
Include the following items:
- Education and Training: Undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral training, provide institution, major/area, degree and year.
- Research and Professional Experience: Beginning with the current position list, in chronological order, professional/academic positions with a brief description.
- Publications: Provide a list of up to 10 publications (and/or patents, copyrights and software systems developed) most closely related to the proposed project. For each publication, provide:
- Names of all authors (in the same sequence in which they appear in the publication). An abbreviated style such as the Physical Review Letters (PRL) convention for citations (list only the first author) may be used for publications with more than 10 authors.
- Article title
- Book or journal title
- Volume number
- Page numbers
- Year of publication
- Website address, if available electronically
- Synergistic Activities: List no more than 5 professional and scholarly activities related to the effort proposed.
As part of the biosketch, consider including:
- Invited and/or public lectures
- Awards received
- Scientific program committees
- Conference or workshop organization
- Professional society activities
- Special international or industrial partnerships
- Reviewing or editorship activities
- Other scientific leadership experiences
In addition to the biosketch, DOE solicitations often but not always require an additional form, the List of Individuals Who Should Not Serve as Reviewers. This must be submitted for each senior/key person identified in the application including subrecipients. Follow instructions in the individual FOA.
Current and Pending Support
Current and Pending Support allows the identification of potential duplication, overcommitment, potential conflicts of interest or commitment, and all other sources of support.
- Who submits: Covered individuals, including the PI, Co-PI and each senior/key person at the prime applicant and any proposed subaward.
- When to submit: At initial proposal, when adding new covered individuals, renewal/continuation application, and in Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) as required by award terms. Many DOE FOAs and awards require submitting an updated current and pending within 30 days of a change.
- Format: SciENcv (required). Learn more about using SciENcv
-
Provide a list of all sponsored activities, awards, and appointments, whether:

All foreign government-sponsored talent recruitment programs must be identified in current and pending support.
For every activity, list the following items:

- Award period (start date – end date).
- Person-months of effort per year being dedicated to the award or activity
