Effective August 5, 2026, NASA will require Research Security Training, similar to other federal agencies. All "covered individuals” on proposals submitted to and Active Awards funded by NASA will need to complete this training. The KC system will begin checking these requirements on proposals and awards beginning July 30, 2026.
- NASA defines 'covered individuals' as any Principal Investigator (PI) (regardless of level of effort), any CoPI (regardless of level of effort), and only Co-Investigators (Co-I) proposing to spend ten percent or more of their time in any given year on a NASA-funded award.
- For KC system beginning July 30th:
- Proposals – system will display a data validation error to prevent proposal routing and proposals being approved if persons listed as Sr./Key Persons have not completed this training
- New awards and award modifications – system will place Award in HOLD status if Sr./Key Persons have not completed this training.
Note: Those in the role of “Subaward Investigator” are excluded, as their organization will certify research security training requirements have been met for their subaward personnel.
