The new NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy) becomes effective on January 25, 2023. Please note that the policy includes significant changes, including:
- ALL competing grant applications, contract proposals, intramural research projects, and other transactions funded in whole or in part by NIH which generate scientific data and/or metadata must include a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP).
- Individual NIH Institutes, Centers, or Offices may have additional policies and expectations (see NIH Institute and Center Data Sharing Policies).
NIH submissions must include a DMSP of two pages or less that outlines how scientific data and any accompanying metadata will be managed and shared.
NIH guide notice NOT-OD-21-013 describes the elements to address.
Research Administration Services (RAS), VPR Compliance, and MIT Libraries have been working together to coordinate services and resources to help researchers and their staff comply with this new policy, including:
- NIH Data Management and Sharing: This new page on the RAS website includes budgeting information and links to other useful resources. We will continue to provide updated guidance and resources as they become available.
- NIH Proposal Resources and Updates – November 29, 10 am: Register for this RAP session for a discussion of this and other NIH updates.
- MIT Libraries Data Management Services: The team has created the summary and resource documents below, and they are available to assist with data management plan development and advise on effective implementation. Contact them at data-management@mit.edu.
