Postdoc Minimum Salary Increase – effective January 1, 2023

It was recently announced that the minimum postdoctoral salary/stipend at MIT will increase to $65,000, effective January 1, 2023. This increase applies to all postdoctoral scholars (associates and fellows) at all levels of experience. During the first 12 months of the new minimum being in effect, central funding will be provided to cover the difference between current salaries and $65,000. New salary levels should be used immediately in all proposals. Three percent (3%) increases should be budgeted in future years, consistent with other salaries. More information can be found in this letter to faculty and PIs, and this letter to postdoctoral scholars.

While this is very welcome news for postdoctoral scholars, it presents some administrative challenges for MIT administrators. On Monday, November 7, VPR Postdoctoral Services hosted an information meeting for key administrative contacts to provide an overview of the process. Slides from the meeting (Requires Touchstone login) are available on the Postdoctoral Services admin web page.

VPR Postdoctoral services is working with the Provost Office and VPF to finalize the supplement process and is compiling FAQs. The FAQs will live on the web page for administrative updates (Requires Touchstone login). If you have additional questions about the process for postdoctoral scholars in your area, please check with the key administrative contact in your area. You can also email mitpostdocs-www@mit.edu or contact your RAS contract administrator.
